Céret and Picasso

Home to the Museum of Modern Art and in years past, to Picasso and Matisse.
Street art in Céret

After a few days' driving from Paris to our new exchange home in the Pyrenees Orientale we've started to explore this fascinating area. First up was Céret, home to a lovely Museum of Modern Art.

The Museum here not only has an impressive collection of artists who lived and worked in Céret such as Picasso but we were lucky to catch an exhibition, La Trace et le Souffle, by Algerian/French artist Najia Mehadji. Her brushwork using a kind of huge comb made of bamboo was fascinating and the colours so striking and bold. Her art looked stunning against the stark white walls of this building.

The gallery is in the heart of Céret, with mature shady trees lining the squares and narrow streets where we enjoyed many a leisurely lunch.

Market days took on a much busier flavour but not, thankfully affecting the tasty food. Elaine was able to show us around, briefly, before her departure for our place in Sydney!
